DR registered a 9.5% drop in teenage pregnancies in 2023

DR registered a 9.5% drop in teenage pregnancies in 2023

Adolescent pregnancy cases dropped by 9.5% in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to preliminary data from the National Statistics Office (ONE). ONE says it is the third year of a downward trend in teenage pregnancies.

In 2022, hospital registries estimated the number of births of teenage mothers at 25,489. Cases then declined to 23,070 in 2023, with an absolute difference of 2,419 births, or a 9.5% decline.

The Children and Adolescents Cabinet (Gana) and the National Council for Children and Adolescents (Conani) released the information. In a joint statement, the entities attribute the decline to the efforts of various institutions, led by Gana, with the technical support and coordination of Conani.

DR competes with US for plastic surgeries; tips to reduce risk

DR competes with US for plastic surgeries tips to reduce risk

The boom in demand by US citizens for plastic surgeries in the Dominican Republic has led to US medics extolling their competitive advantages. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Health in the DR says better controls are in place to ensure quality in the local plastic surgery procedures to reduce risks.

The director of the Renacip, the plastic surgery medical residence at the Gautier public hospital in Santo Domingo, Dr. Severo Mercedes warns patients to consult only with plastic surgeons who keep the higher standards and are members of the Dominican Society of Plastic Surgeons (Sodocipre). Dr. Severo Mercedes warns patients to stay away from physicians who may accept to carry out multiple procedures simultaneously, increasing patient risk.

According to data offered by the president of the Dominican Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (Sodocipre), Sergio Guzmán Padilla, in 2023, 40,000 foreign-residing patients underwent plastic surgery procedures here, most coming from the United States, Spain and Italy.

The Dominican Republic is No. 1 in medical tourism in the Caribbean region, with plastic surgeries being the most demanded medical service. From 2009 to 2022, 93 US citizens died of plastic surgeries in the Dominican Republic. Most of the deaths were due to embolic events, that may occur when a blood clot that forms elsewhere in the body breaks loose and travels to the brain via the bloodstream, causing a stroke.

In a meeting with Center for Disease Control representatives, the Ministry of Public Health gave insights into the controls in place to improve the quality of medical services. The CDC acknowledged during a meeting with Ministry of Public Health officers that plastic surgeons here are offering quality services for better prices and this combination is attracting the patients.

Public Health Minister Victor Atallah says deaths have declined in recent years due to better quality controls.

Marbete time

Marbete time

It’s that time of the year again. At the onset of the Christmas holidays, the Taxes Agency (DGII) announced that only 678,000 persons have renewed their vehicle registration tax called the “marbete,” a small sticker that goes on the windshield of all cars. Time is running out and there are a million cars and light trucks that have not obtained theirs yet. The renewal period ends on 31 January 2024.

Called a “circulation tax,” the sticker is required to drive a car or pickup truck in the Dominican Republic.

What makes this newsworthy is that while it is very easy to obtain one of these stickers, every year folks wait until the very last minute to obtain it. With just a photocopy of the vehicle’s registration, a photocopy of the cedula, and the required fee, the sticker can be obtained at almost any financial institution, especially all of the branches of the various savings and loan associations.

But wait! There is more! The sticker is available online. Just go to dgii.gob.do, click on “Renueve Marbete” and fill out the form. The DGII will deliver the sticker to your door.

Online services are available until 14 January 2024. After that, a person has to go to a financial institution — any bank or S&L, or the offices of the DGII.

So far, 14% of the folks have used the Internet, and only 5% have gone to the DGII offices.

For vehicles over five years old, the cost is RD$1,500; for newer vehicles, the cost is RD$3,000.

Those who do not renew their marbete on time pay a penalty of RD$2,000. If a person is stopped by an agent of Digesett (the traffic cops), the fine is another RD$1,000.

DR lifts ban on flights from and to Haiti

The Civil Aviation Board (JAC) issued Resolution 234-23, lifting as of Monday, 30 October 2023 the suspension of air operations between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The ban on flights has been in effect since 14 September 2023.

The suspension of the flights affected travelers from Haiti who regularly connected to global destinations through Dominican airports.

Addressing the subject during the La Semanal press conference on Monday, 30 October 2023, President Luis Abinader said that the flight cancellations affected diplomats in Haiti and others connecting through the DR, and flight restoration will not affect security.

As a result of the cancellation, thousands of Haitians had contracted charter flights abroad, many with Dominican airlines that previously had flown these to the Dominican Republic to connect from here.

The Dominican Republic interrupted the flights when shutting down the borders in protest of constructing a canal that would divert the waters of a river born in the Dominican Republic. The waterworks project is underway with support from the Haitian government.

Average age in DR is 29 years

Average age in DR is 29 years

The statistics from the 2022 National Census reveal the average age is 29 years.

Carlos Hernandez of the National Statistics Office explains the DR is enjoying what is known as the “demographic bonus,” when the majority of a country’s inhabitants are of productive age. The demographic bonus is described as the condition in which the productive age population is more than the non-productive population.

Hernandez told Diario Libre that this is “the moment of opportunity to generate wealth, where the working-age population exceeds the dependent population.” The demographic bonus happens when the child population (under 15) has decreased and the elderly population (over 65) has not yet aged as much. He says this is a unique and unrepeatable state in the natural evolution of populations.
