Ombudsman warns the President the population cannot pay fines for not wearing masks

Barahona.-The Ombudsman of the Dominican Republic, warned the President of the Republic, Danilo Medina, that the Dominican population is not in economic conditions to pay fines for the non-use of masks, which was imposed by resolution of the Ministry of Public Health ( MPS).

Zoila Martínez Guantes indicated that it is not true that the situation of the health crisis in the country caused by the Covid-19, will be fixed by imposing fines on the people.

She characterized resolution 00-16 as unfair, which requires the payment of fines of 10 to 100 thousand pesos to people who do not wear masks in public and private places.

The Ombudsman also warned the Attorney General of the Republic, through communication, which was also sent to President Medina, saying that this situation is not prudent for the Dominican population, which is also experiencing an economic crisis derived from Covid-19.

The resolution indicates that Law No. 42-01 establishes that failure to comply with the measures established by the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance to prevent and control communicable diseases is considered a violation of the law, which will be sanctioned with fines ranging from one to ten minimum wages.

Martínez Guante offered these statements after supervising the delivery of provincial certificates by INDRHI to 375 families who were relocated after the construction of the Monte Grande Dam in Barahona, where she made the donation of 10,000 fruit trees for the realization of an extensive planting operation in the areas of the houses that will house the families of Los Güiros, Mote Grande, San Simón and the Plateau.
