The Whale Watching season begins in the Dominican Republic
The season for whale watching is about to start again. The first humpbacks have already been observed and the tour boats are ready to sail out in the bay of Samaná. The visitors are welcomed on large placards with the slogan: ‘Welcome to the season 2019’.
The season runs from January 15 to March 15. Again, it was emphasized that keeping distance and not disturbing the whales is a necessity. 100 boats have received permission this season to carry out trips with tourists to the humpback whales. In 2016 there were about 55,000 visitors, in 2017 there were more than 57,000 and this year the figure of 60,000 is expected to be exceeded. This time of the year 1500 to 2000 humpback whales arrive from the North Atlantic to the shores of the Dominican Republic to mate and give birth. They can be seen in large numbers in the National Park ‘Los Haitises’ on the peninsula of Samaná. Last year the humpback whale has been spotted regularly near the coast of Sosúa and Puerto Plata, and that is really special and exceptional. If we have the same luck as last year, to be able to observe these mighty mammals in the bay of Sosúa is not certain.
