Samana roads restored after Hurricane Fiona
Intense efforts by Ministry of Public Works crews have reopened most of the roads obstructed by trees and debris during Hurricane Fiona on Monday, 19 September 2022. Traffic was fully restored on Duarte Highway which connects the South and the North less than 24 hours after the storm.
The Ministry of Public Works says that roads affected by Hurricane Fiona in the northeastern region have been cleared so that aid can reach those in need and for restoration efforts to continue as needed.
Vehicular traffic to the touristic areas of Las Terrenas and Portillo on the northeast coast had been cut off but was being restored on Wednesday, 21 September by the brigades using chainsaws and other heavy equipment to reopen the roads on the same Wednesday.
Roberto Herrera, deputy minister of Supervision and Control of Public Works, said that he made a supervisory tour of different communities in the provinces of Duarte, Samaná, and María Trinidad Sánchez, to assess the damages caused by the storm. Reports are that normalcy is back in San Francisco de Macoris, the main city in Duarte less than 24 hours after the storm.
