DR makes the Tokyo Olympics baseball tournament

DR makes the Tokyo Olympics baseball tournament

The Dominican Republic will be one of the six teams to play in the Tokyo Olympics baseball championship. The other teams are Mexico, Japan, Israel, South Korea, and the United States.

Baseball is to be featured at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Tokyo, for the first time since the 2008 Summer Olympics. The baseball tournament at the Olympics will be from Wednesday, 28 July to Saturday, 7 August 2021.

The DR won the Mexico qualifier undefeated. Team Dominican Republic defeated Venezuela 8-5 in the final game at the Hermanos Serdán Stadium in Puebla, Mexico. Venezuela had defeated the Netherlands to play the DR in the final.

As reported, the win was possible after the DR was trailing 0-3 in the bottom of the third, former New York Yankees outfielder Melky Cabrera hit a two-run homer off Eduardo Paredes, who had come in to relieve starter Yapson Gómez.

International pharma recognizes DR as new hub of medical device manufacturing

International pharma recognizes DR as new hub of medical device manufacturing

The geographical location, stable governments, and policies for industrial free zones have allowed the Dominican Republic to become a major player in the manufacture of medical devices in the region as well as in the Americas. Different policies in the United States contributed to this growth, but it was Dominican manpower, executive leadership, and government incentives that brought this segment of manufacturing to the country, according to a report in Pharmaboard.

The pharmaceutical industry specialized website explains that the CBI, or Caribbean Basin Initiative, a decades-old policy to provide incentives to the economies of the Caribbean region was one step. Another was Section 936 of the United States Internal Revenue Code which provided major tax incentives to Puerto Rico and provided sufficient incentives for joint ventures with the Dominican Republic. When the tax advantages whithered out, the companies shifted everything to the Dominican Republic. Companies such as Medtronic, J&J, Cardinal Health, Baxter, B. Braun, Beckton Dickinson, Edwards, and Fresenius Kabe all have one or more facilities within the free trade areas of the country.

William Malamud, the president of the chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce in the DR, said that while the country was primarily known for its exports of commodities, agricultural products, and mining, the free zones have become the source of 60% of the total exports nowadays. With freight costs from China soaring to record heights nearly every week, the location of the DR so near to the United States and South America is playing an ever-greater role in its industrial policies.

DR to require proof of vaccination or negative PCR for 18 countries

DR to require proof of vaccination or negative PCR for 18 countries

The Civil Aviation Board (JAC) will require proof of full vaccination or a negative PRC test for entry into the Dominican Republic, starting 28 June 2021 for citizens or arrivals from 18 nations. The measure is in JAC Resolution No. 133-2021.

The resolution requires the traveler to present results of a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours prior to arrival or a vaccination card with proof that the second dose had been administered no less than three weeks prior to the travel date.

The measure also applies to all passengers from these countries arriving in Dominican territory from a third country, and those who have been in these countries for 14 days or less.

The measures also establish that crew members coming on flights from any of the 18 countries must present their vaccination card or PCR test or else quarantine within the hotel.

The 18 nations whose citizens or persons arriving in flights originated in these countries now need to present the tests are Australia, the United Kingdom (Britain, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland), Indonesia, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Ireland, the Democratic Republic of Congo, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Senegal, Syria, Sweden, Monaco, Thailand, Tunisia, Brazil, South Africa, and India.

The new requirement is expected to affect only about 1.3% of visitors.

Nobody can use sirens, police horns or police lights

Nobody can use sirens, police horns or police lights

The National Traffic and Ground Transportation Institute (Intrant) has issued Resolution 01-2021 banning the civilian use of any of the lights, horns or sirens usually identified with police or rescue/ambulances. These horns and flashing lights have become more frequent of late as people strive to get from one place to another in the hellish traffic of the big cities. Some people just want to be seen and heard as being “important” as they falsely bull their way through traffic.

The resolution is backed by Art. 228 of Transit Law 63-17 that covers everything related to vehicles and ground transportation. Anyone found with these devices can be fined from over RD$5,000 to a maximum of over RD$15,000. The Ground Transportation, Traffic and Safety Agency (Digesett) is charged with enforcing this rule. Any vehicle found to be in violation can be detained and towed.

Government starts building the Nagua promenade

President Luis Abinader was in Nagua over the weekend to announce the start of the construction of the Nagua boardwalk and seawall and meet with the community. The works are expected to take a year and a half.

Work has begun on the construction of the Malecon at a cost of approximately RD$2.7 billion. The boardwalk is intended to serve as coastal protection, and as a tourist and recreation attraction in the northeastern city.

The Nagua Malecon will be 3.5 km long. It will have a height of up to four meters. Wave breakers will be installed to protect Nagua residents from rising waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The infrastructure works include a pier for fishermen and their boats and a marina for private luxury boats. A heliport is included, too.

The Nagua beach will be conditioned with children’s recreational areas, fitness areas, food areas, and an amphitheater, too.

A ring road with four 3.50m lanes, two in each direction, and 2.75m bike lanes and 3.75m sidewalks will be built.

Nagua is a bustling commercial city located on a beach by the Atlantic Ocean. It is popular with domestic travelers who stop buy to enjoy the fare of its seafood restaurants.
