Dominican volleyball in top-10

The “Queens of the Caribbean” team has had a very demanding past season in the world of volleyball elite competitions. The National Women’s Volleyball Team—a.k.a. The “Queens of the Caribbean”—as of 29 September is ranked #10 in the world. The Dominican team is preparing to compete in the continental Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualifier to take place in Santo Domingo in January 2020.

Coach Marcos Kwiek says that 2019 has been a good year for the team. He said the team won matches against teams that are better ranked in the FIVB rankings. The list is impressive indeed: The USA, in the League of Nations and North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (Norceca); Brazil, Russia and Japan, in the League of Nations; Serbia and Holland, in the League of Nations, in the World Cup.

The current world rankings have China at the top of the list, followed by the USA, Serbia, Brazil, Russia, Netherlands, Japan, Italia, Korea and the Dominican Republic. On that list, only China and Italy escaped defeat by the Queens of the Caribbean. Both the USA and Korean teams lost twice to the Queens of the Caribbean. The DR lost 3-2 to Brazil in the pre-Olympic trials held in Santo Domingo.

Coach Kwiek stressed that the win over the USA was not a fluke nor did that team have a “bad day” nor was the DR playing its greatest game.
“This has been a great year,” Kwiek stressed.
