In a new development in the David Ortiz attempted murder case, Alberto Miguel Rodríguez Mota, a fugitive from justice, is identified by the authorities as the person who allegedly would pay for committing the hit-and-run crime. The authorities did not say why or have provided more information on the intellectual authors of the crime. Already more than a dozen persons are under arrest or sought for in this case.
The authorities say their investigations show that Gabriel Alexander Pérez Vizcaíno (Hueso), who surrendered last Friday, 15 June 2019, as part of those implicated in the attack on Ortiz, was used by José Eduardo Ciprian (Chuky) to put the group of hitmen in contact with Alberto Miguel Rodríguez Mota.
National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista reported last week that those who attacked Ortiz were offered RD$400,000.
The document from the Public Ministry explains that Rodriguez Mota discussed the plan and details with Ciprian, who at the time was in the Azua 15 Jail.
Major League former baseball player David Ortiz was attacked on Sunday night, 9 at Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo Este.
The DEA, FBI and other law enforcement organizations from the United States are participating in the inquiry regarding the shooting of David Ortiz, according to the New York Daily News. A DEA spokeswoman told the New York media that the DEA could not comment on an ongoing investigation into the motive and identification of the intellectual author of the crime.
The publication states that the theories as to why Ortiz was shot have varied considerably since the shooting, but that the main one is that the Dominican police believe he was attacked by two policemen contracted by a Dominican drug dealer who believed Ortiz was having an affair with his wife.
However, Ortiz’ press secretary, Leo Lopez, denies that the shooting had anything to do with a woman, but it was a murder for hire.

The press secretary of David Ortiz, Leo López, has said that Ortiz continues to be stable in the intensive care unit at the Mass General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. López says Ortiz’s health is stable, but he is kept in the ICU as medics are monitoring the development of any infection. He said there is no timeframe for him to be transferred to a standard room.
Ortiz was shot last Sunday, 9 June 2019 in a bar in Santo Domingo East, and following an operation in the Dominican Republic, he was transferred by air ambulance to Boston.
Also injured in the incident was communicator Jhoel Lopez.
In a statement on 13 June 2019, David Ortiz’s wife, Tiffany thanked the “selfless” man who drove her husband to the hospital (Eliezer Salvador) and the “amazing” medical team who cared for him as he continues to recover from surgery to treat a gunshot wound at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Doctors removed part of Ortiz’s gallbladder and part of his intestine. In her statement, Tiffany Ortiz stated: “To the amazing surgeons, medical team, and staff at the Abel González Clinic in the Dominican Republic, there are no words to express our gratitude for the amazing care you provided. Without you, our story could have had a tragic ending. You will forever be our guardian angels.”

The Police director Ney Aldrín Bautista and Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez named three people that investigators say are the material authors of the shooting of baseball player David Ortiz. Rolfy Ferreyra Cruz or Ramón Martínez (Rolfi) is identified as the man who fired at Ortiz on Sunday, 9 June 2019, at the Dial Bar & Lounge of Ensanche Ozama in eastern Santo Domingo. He was arrested in northwestern Mao, Valverde, together with Oliver Moisés Mirabal Acosta. Eddy Vladimir Feliz García (El Nata) was the first suspect arrested after the motorcycle he was driving skidded and he and the shooter fell off. The gunman got away at the time, but Feliz García was captured and beaten by a crowd.
In the press conference called at the Public Ministry on Wednesday, 12 June 2019, with the participation of Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez and Police director Ney Aldrin Bautista, the authorities said others are under arrest in the case.
The Police director said that the coordinator of the action had been contracted for RD$400,000. Nevertheless, despite saying that the material authors of the crime had been captured in 72 hours after the attack, Bautista nor Rodríguez did not name the intellectual authors of the crime or the motive.
The Police presented surveillance video showing evidence that the attempted murder had been planned. The Police showed surveillance video in which the two suspects who arrived on the motorcycle had met with other persons in two vehicles that were in the area. The Police director said it has evidence that one of the cars had been that same day in Mao.
The director of the Police said that police investigators are handling several hypotheses concerning the possible motive for the crime and that the investigation is ongoing as evidence is collected. He said this was a preliminary statement made just 72 hours after the crime. The Police expects to be able to offer more details soon. The Police is building several hypotheses primarily from testimonies and evidence from surveillance videos in Santo Domingo and Mao.
The Police director said that on the same Sunday of the attack at 5:30pm a surveillance vehicle captured how Eddy Vladimir Feliz García (El Nata) had met with Oliver Moisés Mirabal Acosta in Las Caobas neighborhood in northern Santo Domingo. Mirabal Acosta would later be arrested on Tuesday evening in Mao, Valverde.
The director of the Police said that surveillance followed two vehicles and showed a woman also meeting with the group in Las Caobas meeting with Feliz Garcia and Mirabal Acosta. The surveillance cameras confirmed the same cars were later at Calle Octavio Mejía Ricart in Ensanche Ozama at the time of the shooting at 9:20 pm, and on one occasion the occupants of the motorcycle boarded the vehicle, leaving their bike parked outside, and later re-boarded the bike to head to the Dial Bar & Lounge.
The director of the Police stressed that they are in the investigative phase and could not share more details. “Trust that we will have the motive and other details,” he said.
The suspected shooter does not have a police record. Nevertheless, Oliver Mirabal has other cases pending in the judiciary.
Police director Bautista said that the case is receiving the normal attention of a criminal investigation process. He said the Police has been working overtime to present the material authors, including the person who fired at David Ortiz. He said during a second phase of the investigations would provide the results of the ongoing investigation.
The Police presented the Hi-Power Browning pistol that would have been used to shoot Ortiz.
The Police identified a silver Hyundai, property of the wife of Oliver Moises Mirabal, and a Hyundai Sonata in which Porfirio Allende and his spouse “La Venezolana” (also Pelirubia) were on board.
The Police said that others in custody and suspected as accomplices in the shooting case are Joel Rodríguez de la Cruz (Calamardo), Porfirio Allende Dechamps Vásquez (Nene) and Reynaldo Rodríguez Valenzuela. The Police says they are on the trail of Luis Alfredo Rivas (El Cirujano), “La Venezolana,” Marcos Díaz and Alexander.
The Attorney General named the suspect gunman as Ramon Martínez (Rolfi), while the Police director referred to him as Rolfy Ferreyra Cruz.
Diario Libre reported that the Rolfy Ferreyra and Luis Alfredo Rivas Clase have criminal records in the United States.
Ines Aizpun writes in a Diario Libre editorial on the successful operation at the Centro de Medicina Avanzada Abel González that saved David Ortiz’s life.

Baseball star David Ortiz was flown to Mass General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts to continue his recovery from a gunshot wound suffered on Sunday evening, 9 June 2019.
David Ortiz left the Abel González Advanced Medicine Clinic in Santo Domingo on Tuesday, 10 June at 5:15pm to take an air ambulance for the flight to Boston, Massachusetts.
His father, Leo Ortiz stated: “We are going to the city of Boston, not because of the lack of medical services in the country, because we have are very satisfied, but the family and David’s private doctors await us in Boston.” Ortiz arrived to Boston at 10:35pm and was taken directly to Mass General Hospital.
In Santo Domingo, Ortiz had been operated at the Abel González Advanced Medicine Clinic on Av. Abraham Lincoln, where he remained in the intensive care unit until his condition was stabilized so he could be flown to Boston.
The bullet went through Ortiz’s back, out of his abdomen and then the same bullet hit TV host Jhoel López in the leg. Both men are out of danger.
The spokesman for the clinic, Dr. Abel González, had said that the surgery on Ortiz was successful. He noted that the bullet struck the liver and the small and large intestines. He says Ortiz’s gall bladder was removed to make space to treat the liver. He was operated by doctors José Abel González, José Alejandro Smester López and Felipe Martínez.
Ortiz was shot while out with friends, television producer Jhoel López and the rap singer, Urbano Secreto, in the Dial Bar on Venezuela Avenue, in eastern Santo Domingo. He was said to be a frequent patron of the popular Ozama neighborhood bar and dance parlor.
In the case, the Police have said they have under arrest Eddy Feliz Garcia, aged 25. The Police suspect he was the driver of the motorcycle that transported the assailant to the scene. Feliz García has a police record with arrests for drug charges in 2017. The bike is also under custody.
But the man who fired against Ortiz is fugitive. The Police is on the lookout of the other person who is seen on the surveillance video shooting at the ball player.
The Police are investigating the possibility that the killer had been contracted and it was due to “a fight over a woman”. Photos and videos have extensively circulated on social media showing a voluptuous woman said to be what sparked the incident. A video of a woman who was not allowed to see Ortiz at the Abel González Clinic has also circulated on social media.
Ortiz’s spokesperson, Leo Lopez, told local press that a hitman is suspected, but denied claims that jealousy and a woman were behind the shooting. The New York Post carried a report whereby sources within the Police had mentioned the woman as the motive for the shooting.
Major General Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte has gone on record saying the shooting was not a robbery. He said the Police is carrying out an exhaustive investigation into the incident.
The Central Office of Investigation (Dicrim) and the Forensic Police are working the scene to clarify what exactly happened at 10:30pm on Sunday. Witnesses are being interviewed and the Police are working to discover if other people are involved. The Police says it has made several arrests.
As reported, FBI agents from the United States are working with the local Police authorities on the case.

The Chamber of Deputies approved a bill that requests that the Ministry of Education (Minerd) make obligatory the reading of the Bible in the nation’s schools after the singing of the National Anthem. This process is contemplated under Law 44-00 that amended General Education Law 66-97, and the deputies feel that such readings would contribute to a lower rate of vandalism and other anti-social acts by young persons.
The Ministry of Education has not made the measure obligatory on the grounds that Art. 45 of the Constitution establishes freedom of conscience and religion in the Dominican Republic. The article states: “The state guarantees the freedom of conscience and religion, subject to the need for public order and respect for public morals.”
The bill says that “the Christian development of the boys and girls and adolescents helps them form criteria and behavior that are capable of stopping influences and behavior models that lead to perversity and licentiousness.” The deputies emphasized that the Dominican educational system is based on the Christian principles seen in the Gospels as evidenced on the national shield that features an open Bible and the words “God, Fatherland and Freedom.”
The bill still has to pass in the Senate to become law.

Investigative journalist Nuria Piera asks the question that has been on many minds. What has happened to the civic movement Green March that so successfully had mobilized all classes to call for an end to government corruption impunity?
Movement leading member, former deputy Guadalupe Valdez says that the Marcha Verde is in a planning phase. Nevertheless, the analysis by Nuria Piera investigative team says the strong civic movement has fizzled out as the elections get closer. It says politician involvement, sectarianism and lengthy assemblies in which no consensus was reached have dampened the enthusiasm of followers. The last straw was when speeches were directed to motivate the resignation of President Danilo Medina.
The Medina administration covertly was concerned but chose to openly ignore and downplay the spontaneous marching of hundreds of thousands of people who had paid for their green shirts and marched on main avenues in an organized manner.
