Santo Domingo.- The hoteliers and tourism business leaders grouped in Asonahores on Thursday rallied behind the executives of the Barceló hotels chain and stated their concern with the Judicial system’s actions in eastern La Altagracia province
“The case denounced by Barceló Hotels when a civil and commercial suit was turned into a criminal prosecution is of great concern with the recent prison sentence on grand larceny conviction against five senior executives of that hotel chain, in its main tourist complex in Punta Cana,” the entity said in an emailed statement.
Asonahores said the incident could have a negative impact on the country’s image as an investment destination and requested a sweeping purge in the zone’s judicial structure.

Asonahores warned that the repeated judicial scandals in Dominican Republic’s top tourism region don’t go unnoticed in financial and investment centers abroad, in addition to the “evictions-turned-assaults” in disrespect of due process, with several hotels “practically ransacked” by people bearing alleged court orders.
“We saw frightful images of groups of people invading hotels for hours and terrifying the local and foreign tourists lodged there, some of which were stripped of their belongings, and the businesses later faced hundreds of lawsuits from people for the frightful situation they had to withstand,” the hoteliers warned, their latest in a decades long list of similar actions by seemingly untouchable criminal groups.

Santo Domingo.- The coordinator of civic group Citizen Participation (PC) Wednesday said every government administration has incurred in corruption, and called it an evil that has been a disaster for transparency.
Francisco Alvarez said joint actions are needed to halt that practice, which in his view greatly jeopardizes society.
The coordinator of PC, which gets partial funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), affirms that corruption indices have increased during Hipólito Mejia’s Presidency, as well as during president Leonel Fernandez’s term, without prosecutions. “The information we have in Citizen Participation is that the citizens’ perception is that corruption has been increasing in all governments.”
Meanwhile Transparency International president Huguette Labelle, who’s visiting the country this week, said Citizen Participation should observe the presidential election in May, to guarantee transparency in the polls.

SANTO DOMINGO. – The National Drugs Control Agency (DNCD) today arrested three Canadian women who tried to leave the country with 18 kilos of what appears to be cocaine in 1,382 capsules adhered to their body and prior to boarding a flight to Toronto at Punta Cana International Airport.
DNCD spokesman Lebrón Roberto said also arrested were several Dominicans in the community of Verón, eastern Higüey, suspected of being the contact to acquire the drug.
He said the Canadians Daniela Maria Pea Ruggiero and Carla Lopes, both 29, and Violet Teresa Pluas, 38, had 489, 455 and 438 capsules taped to their bodies, and had traveled to the country several times just this year.

“The actions of those citizens were being watched for some time, taking into account the frequency in which they came to Dominican Republic as alleged tourists. The same was done with several Dominicans, mostly women, and in fact the evidence shows that it’s a narco-trafficking network,” Lebron said.

Santo Domingo. – The United States on Monday warned of the risk posed by the Mona Passage for boatpeople who try to reach Puerto Rico illegally, just one week after a makeshift craft sank with more than 70 people on board, with only 13 survivors and 56 bodies recovered so far, and hours after the US Coast Guard intercepted a group of 31 near its territory.
The Customs and Border Protection Service (CBP) warned that illegal crossings by migrants lead to the highest number of deaths worldwide. “The trip’s dangers are summarized in three potential outcomes: the victimization of undocumented people by organizations of smugglers, the inconvenience of criminal prosecution and the loss life at sea.”
“The people who venture to cross the 60 nautical miles (111 kilometers) between Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, boarding a rustic and inadequate boat, place not only their life in danger, but the lives of public safety officers with the rescue mission,” the CBP said.
It also warned that the danger isn’t jut the fragility of the boats known as yolas but also the risk of falling victim to criminal organizations that traffic with people.

Of the 31 migrants intercepted Thursday 13 nautical miles near Puerto Rico’s southwest coast of Cabo Rojo, 30 are Dominican and one Haitian.
The US Coast Guard repatriated 22 the undocumented people this weekend while the CBP filed charges against nine undocumented travelers as repeat offenders.
