A whale watching season begins

At a press conference in Samana, the Minister of environment, announced the opening of whale watching season. The season runs from January 15th to March 15th. At the meeting representatives of environmental organizations, the Ministry of Tourism and entrepreneurs were present.

The environment minister emphasized in his speech that it is necessary to keep distance and not to disturb the whales. Only 46 boats have been authorized to carry out trips with tourists to watch the humpback whales since they proved to act strictly to the rules. This time of the year the humpback whales arrive from the North Atlantic to the shores of the Dominican Republic to mate and give birth. They can be seen in large numbers in the National Park ‘Los Haitises’ on the peninsula of Samana. Last year the humpback whale was spotted regularly near the coast of SosĂșa and Puerto Plata, and that is really special and exceptional. If we are lucky as last year, we will be able to observe these mighty mammals in the bay of SosĂșa again.
