Vaccinate thousands of girls against human papilloma virus

SANTO DOMINGO. More than 8,000 girls aged 9 and 10 will be vaccinated against the human papillomavirus in Area I Health Center in Santo Domingo Este.

Dr. Belkys Metivier informed that they have already begun to vaccinate in some rural schools of localities like El Mamón and Guerra. It is the first time that girls are vaccinated against human papilloma, a way to prevent cervical cancer.

It is a new vaccine that goes into the immunization program and it is expected to reduce the number of women dying from cervical cancer, which is about 600 women each year.

“The vaccine is directed at the human papillomavirus, which is a propeller of cervical cancer and has been activated in a pre-adolescent population because they have not begun sexual life yet, and the vaccine is supposed to prevent the virus and deaths.” says Dr. Metivier.
