Traffic accidents in the DR leave 1,217 dead from January to September

Santo Domingo.- During the first nine months of 2017, 1,217 deaths were registered due to traffic accidents in the Dominican Republic, a figure that represents a decrease of 25% compared to the 1,623 fatalities accounted in the same period of 2016.

The statistical bulletin of the Citizen Security Observatory for the period of January-September highlights that the projections suggest that at the end of the year the rate of fatalities on Dominican roads will be 16 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Deaths in traffic accidents are the main cause of violent death in the country, followed by drowning and electrocution, and 87% of the records correspond to male people.

In 23% of the cases, the age range of the deceased, both men and women, is between 20 and 29 years of age, although it must be taken into account that, in almost a third of these violent deaths, It has not transcended the specific age of the victim, said the Citizen Security Observatory document.

Almost a quarter of fatal accidents (24%), occurs on Sunday, and as for the time of greatest incidence is between 18:00 and 23:50 hours, which groups 30% of cases for every day in a general way.

As for the causes attributable to fatal traffic accidents, the collision between motor vehicles, with 58% of the accidents of the period, is the main cause within this indicator, followed by landslides and abuses, which group 19% and 17% of cases, respectively.

However, the report points out that the decrease in mortality from accidents of this type registered at a general level is due, above all, to the fact that collisions between motor vehicles were reduced by 29% compared to the previous year.

The motorcycle remains the first means of transport in number of fatalities, since this vehicle was involved in 66% of accidents, although the document highlights that the deaths of motorcycle users were reduced by 26%.

To the users of this means of locomotion would be followed by pedestrians, who group 17% of the total number of deaths, while passenger cars and off-road vehicles account for 8% of the total.
