Statistics show Dominican population is aging

The National Statistics Office (ONE) says every day there are percentage-wise more seniors in the country due to a declining birthrate and longer life expectancy. Alexandra Izquierdo, director of the ONE, says that the demographic changes present new challenges for the social security system and institutions that provide care for the elderly.

Izquierdo shared other insights into Dominican demographics. She highlighted that the 1920 Census showed a population of 894,665, with only 20% living in cities. By 2020, she said, the population will have grown tenfold, with the Dominican population expected to reach 10,044,000 with three out of every four inhabitants living in a city, demanding greater services in education, electricity, transport, potable water, housing, among others.

The 2010 Census showed the country has a population of 9,445,281, of which 49.83% are women and 50.17% are men.
