Number of Tourists Visiting Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone Continues to Grow

During the first quarter of 2017 the number of tourists who visited Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone jumped an impressive 10%, compared to the same period last year, reports the Ministry of Tourism.

The D.R.’s Colonial Zone has been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Attracted by the offers of the historic center, in the cultural, gastronomic, historical and fun areas 214,393 tourists visited the city from January to March this year. In 2016, in the same period, foreign visitors totaled 194,656.

According to calculations made by the Tourist Observatory of the Ministry of Tourism for the Colonial City, an average of 1,500 foreigners visited the historic center of the Dominican capital and the daily average of overnight stays was 890.

The hotel occupancy rate in these first three months of the year was 69%, for a 4% increase compared to 2016, while the arrival of tourists by cruise ships increased by 53%, for a total of 75,697 in the first trimester.

The average tourist spending of each visitor to the Colonial City from January to March was US $ 151.30 per day.

Visitors to the Colonial Zone are attracted by the 500-year-plus history of the sector, its fine restaurants, and entertainment centers. In total, during January and March some 214,393 tourists visited the Zone.

During the same time period in 2016, approximately 194,656 visited the area.

According to the data presented by the Tourism Watchdog Group of the Ministry of Tourism, some 1,500 international visitors visited the Colonial Zone daily, while 890 stayed overnight in the Zone’s hotels.

Local hotels report that during the first three months of this year hotel occupancy in the Zone reached 69%,a four percent jump in comparison to 2016.

At the same time, the number of international visitors visiting the country on board cruise ships jumped an impressive 53%,for a total of 75,697 visitors during the first three months of 2017. Tourists spent an average of US$151.30 per day during their visit to the Zone.
