Ministry of Health reports 20 deaths so far this year due to leptospirosis

SANTO DOMINGO. – At least 20 deaths from leptospirosis have been recorded so far this year in the country, which is the consequences of the rains and floods currently affecting the country.

The difference in deaths is 16 more compared to last year. Those affected by the disease from January 1 to April 1 are 200 cases.

In that order, the authorities recommend that people in the rain-affected areas avoid moving in dirty waters to avoid contact with urine from rats or other animals and bathing barefoot under rainwater to prevent leptospirosis.

If a person has a fever, it is recommended to immediately go to a nearby health center, to rule out leptospirosis and other illness.

As for the cases of dengue, there are no reports of deaths from the disease.

Flu and yellow fever

The Health Authorities endorses the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO / PAHO) on influenza epidemic in several countries in the region and an outbreak of yellow fever in Brazil.

Measures include providing appropriate clinical care to patients, ensuring adequate supplies of antivirals and continuing to be vaccinated against the flu.
