Chaos continues in the road traffic of Puerto Plata

PUERTO PLATA.- The great majority of the citizens of Puerto Plata who daily move through the streets and avenues of the town, can’t hide their dissatisfaction when it comes to terrible chaos in the traffic that’s been prevailing for a long time.

People express their disappointment with the municipal authorities, as they apparently have not taken actions in order to solve this situation that affects the mobility of pedestrians, motorcyclists, and drivers.

One of the downside of the transit through Puerto Plata is the perimeter of the historic center, since for years the deafening noise, detours through closed streets, heavy vehicle taxiing, among other factors, irritate citizens.

For more than a decade, the local building authorities “have only made promises” to regulate the terrible traffic chaos in the streets of Puerto Plata. On October 20, 2015 before the elections, a new order was approved, which stated that busy streets would be one-way, but this initiative only remained on words.

According to many Puertoplataneans, lack of authority, education, discipline and respect are the main factors of the major disorder in the traffic of vehicles and motorcycles, and apparently  the competent authorities are not interested in solving the root problem at all, since they have only concentrated on threatening to eliminate motorcycle stopping at some corners.

To have an idea of the difficult situation of the transit in Puerto Plata, drivers mostly move in the avenues of entrance and exit to the city, due to the terrible traffic jams lasting hours in the afternoon in the avenue Manolo Tavares Justo, in front of the University UTESA, in addition to the entrance to the Padre Las Casas sector and in front of the perimeter of the Hospital Ricardo Limardo, where despite the existence of traffic lights and AMET agents, traffic is real hell.

Finally, a week ago the director of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) in Puerto Plata, Otto Cordero, reported that they welcome a suggestion of the deputy Tobias Crespo who is the author of the new Traffic Law,  who will accompany the Municipal Mayor to design a system to solve road traffic in Puerto Plata.
