Cable Car Puerto Plata closed for maintenance

The cable car (El Teleférico) to the top of the mountain Isabel de Torres in Puerto Plata is closed for the yearly maintenance work from Monday, October 9th to Sunday, October 29th. This was announced by Rafael Nuñez, the director of the cable car last Tuesday. The cable car was built in 1975 by the Italian company Ceretti-Tanfanni and also the maintenance is (fortunately) in the hands of the company.

We do recommend a trip by cable car to anyone, because during the ride up, you can enjoy a wonderful view over Puerto Plata. At the top you’ll see a little church with a big statue of Jesus Christ standing with his arms spread wide. It’s fun for the tourists to pose in front of the statue and have their picture taken. There are also some very nice walks among lush vegetation. It’s a real nature park with the most beautiful flowers, plants and trees. If you are visiting Puerto Plata it is certainly worthwhile making the trip with the cable car, or as it is called here, ‘El Teleférico’. But it’s best to go on a clear day when there are no clouds. If you’re lucky enough to be on the top of the mountain on a clear day then you’ll have a wonderful view over Puerto Plata and the bay. Then you can imagine why Columbus was so impressed by the natural harbor in the shadow of this mighty mountain.
