Arrival of Tourists to the D.R. Jumps 4.6%; Number of Russian Tourists Increases by an Impressive 13%

The number of international tourists visiting the Dominican Republic jumped by 4.6% during January and February of this year.

The largest number of tourists came from Europe, with 30,136 additional tourists.

This number represents a 13.5% jump in comparison to the same time period last year. Russian tourists contributed to this impressive growth, with an additional 24,034 visiting the country.

The report issued by the Dominican Central Bank also reports that the number of tourists traveling to the D.R. from France (3,471), England (2,463) and Switzerland (1,202) also improved during the first months of the year.

At the same time, 58.7% of all tourists originated in North America, 26.1% from Europe, 11.5% from South America, and 3.4% from Central America and the Caribbean. Smaller percentages were also reported from Asia and the rest of the world.

North America experienced a 2.8% growth, with an additional 15,374 visitors; 10,347 from Canada and 5,706 from the United States.

The Central American and Caribbean regions increased their numbers by 19.5%, contributing an additional 5,377 tourists.

South America, however, experienced a drop of 7.3% in the number of tourists traveling to the D.R. Experts explained that the drop has to do with current political and economic situations in Venezuela and Brazil.

Approximately 538,119 tourists – an additional 19,029 visitors in comparison to the same time period last year – traveled to the country through its various international airports during the January-February period.
