World Tuberculosis Day
Speaking on World Tuberculosis day, the manager of the Tuberculosis Unit at the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Unit, Elsa Camilo said that around 3% of people with TB are under the age of 15.
Camilo said that each year around 4,000 people are diagnosed with TB and 3% of those are children. She said that while the mortality rate has dropped to only 1%, many cases are not detected and hence not treated in time.
She said that another problem was that now TB was becoming resistant to conventional treatments. In the last few months, from October 2015 to February this year, which was the length of time the unit had been operational, there had been 187 consultations and 12 new cases diagnosed.
