Women control 56% of fixed location micro-businesses
The National Statistics Office (ONE) says that 56% of micro businesses in the Dominican Republic operating from a fixed address are owned by women. This compares to 78% of mobile small businesses that are owned by men. Likewise, 90% of farm sector and 100% of mining and fishing small businesses are owned by men. The figures come from the Encuesta Nacional de Hogares de Propositos Multiples (Enhogar 2013). A large percentage of small businesses owned by women are beauty salons. As reported, 46% of micro-businesses report sales of more than RD$14,000 a month, while 60% register sales of under RD$7,000 per month.
