White Marlin Fishing Tournament in Punta Cana
Anglers from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico are leading the fishing fans that starting today, 16 June 2016, will be pacing Caribbean waters in search of a white marlin to win the prizes in the tournament organized by the Santo Domingo Yacht Club’s Punta Cana base.
The tournament is in its 15th year. Organizer Domingo Viyella says that the awards will be presented on Sunday, 18 June. Fishermen from Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Curacao and the United States are taking part in addition to Dominicans. Dominican fishers are coming from yacht clubs in Puerto Bahia (National District – Santo Domingo), Haina (western Santo Domingo), Montecristi, Casa de Campo and Palmar de Ocoa (Peravia-Bani).
Punta Cana is represented by fishermen affiliated to the Cabeza de Toro Santo Domingo Yacht Club and Cap Cana Marina.
The main purpose of the tournament is to work together for the conservation of species including the white marlin, blue marlin, flying fish and spearfish. This is a catch-and-release tournament where fishermen weigh the fish and then release them in less than 30 minutes time.
