Whale watching season is here
Minister of Environment Bautista Rojas Gomez announced the start of this year’s Whale Watching Season yesterday, Monday 18 January 2016. An estimated 60,000 visitors will travel to Samana to see the whales. The whale-watching season ends on 15 March 2016.
Every year, the whales migrate to the Bay of Samana from the North Atlantic via the Silver Banks for their breeding season.
The opening of the Whale Watching Season was attended by Ministry of Environment personnel, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Tourism, the Dominican Armada (Navy), the mayor of Samana, the Dominican Foundation of Marine Studies and local eco-tourism institutions. Representatives of the organizations that guarantee the preservation of the Marine Mammal Sanctuary were also present.
During the ceremony an agreement was signed between the stakeholders. Rojas Gomez stressed the importance of the visiting whales for the country and specifically eco-tourism.
Last year the humpback whales have been spotted regularly near the coast of Sosúa and Puerto Plata, and that is really exceptional. Maybe we will have the same luck as last year, to be able to observe these mighty mammals in the bay of Sosúa.
