Victor Estrella skips Davis Cup
Top Dominican tennis player Victor Estrella has decided to skip the Davis Cup in order to seek professional tournaments that can give him the points that he needs to return to the ATP ranking level needed to become the first Dominican tennis player in the Olympic Games. Estrella reached 56th place on 2 February 2016, but moved down in the rankings after an injury obliged him to pull out of the Morelos Open and lose 100 points. He is now ranked 74th. Only the top 56 make it to the Olympics, but there is also a rule that a maximum of four players per country are allowed.
The Dominican team, made up of Manuel Castellanos, Jose Hernandez, Jose Olivares and Nick Hardt will play the Davis Cup against Chile on 4 to 6 March in the first round of Group 1 of the Americas Zone. If they lose, the team has another change to play Barbados, with Victor Estrella back on the team as well as the return of Roberto Cid after his graduation, as his university did not grant him leave of absence to play the Davis Cup.
