Typical merengue icon Fefita La Grande wins top Dominican showbiz prize
Santo Domingo.- After nearly taking it last year, typical merengue icon Fefita La Grande on Tuesday wont El Gran Soberano, Dominican Republic’s highest showbiz distinction.
Dominican National Brewery president Franklin Leon and the Art Critics Association president Jorge Ramos handed the statuette to Fefita at the end of the annual gala in the National Theatre.
“It is truly an honor, I am happy and pleased to present this award to the Dominican Republic,” Fefita said.
The typical merengue star, born Manuela Josefa Cabrera in Santiago Rodriguez was the big winner in the 32nd annual event, produced by Edilenia Tactuk.
Her win comes just one week after performing with her accordion in a show at the United Palace Theater in New York, to celebrate her 50th anniversary in show business.
