PUERTO PLATA – With the use of two helicopters of the Air Force Dominican Republic (FARD), they managed to locate and rescue Friday afternoon (Sep 9th, 2016) a group of nine foreign tourists who had come to a snorkeling excursion on a boat crewed by 2 Dominicans. The boat sank in the Atlantic Ocean due to technical issues.
The search and rescue work began around 12:30 pm, when the authorities were informed about the disappearance of the boat “My Father” which at 9:00 am left from the Ocean World Marina, but it appeared that the boat had an accident at sea to the point that it capsized.
As soon as it was learned of the disappearance at sea of the nine tourists in addition to the captain of the boat and his assistant, the Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Ruben Dario Paulino Sem, ordered the Air Force through its commanding General, Major General Louis Napoleon Payan Diaz, to immediately search for the tourists and the crew. They used two Super Tucano aircraft and two military helicopters.
After flying around the coastline of the western part of Puerto Plata the air unit managed to spot the group of tourists and two Dominicans about 17 km off Luperon, floating in the water thanks to the life jackets, and successfully carried out the rescue operation.
