Tour Eiffel in Santo Domingo

The Tuesday, 28 November 2016 edition of El Día reports on the construction of the high-standing Tour Eiffel saying that it “steals the show” from the Plaza de la Bandera flag monument in the nearby rotunda.

According to reports, the metal structure is a project being implemented by the Santo Domingo West municipality, under Mayor Francisco Peña, who was re-elected in the 2016 general election. El Día says that Santo Domingo’s Tour Eiffel will be lit up for the holidays, and will remain as a permanent fixture in Santo Domingo West. The mayor was not available for comment on the structure and its cost.

Santo Domingo Oeste mayor Francisco Peña on Wednesday said today people from the Dominican Republic go to France to take a photo of themselves at the Eiffel Tower, but now they can do so here.

“People from here go to take a picture in France, they should now take a picture here,” the mayor told reporters.

Peña has drawn widespread scorn for unseeing half a million pesos of taxpayers’ money to buy a 200-foot tall mock-up of the Eiffel Tower in his city, where some streets have never been paved.

The Mayor affirms that the steel hulk, erected next to the iconic Plaza de la Bandera, aims to “make the people happy during Christmas,” once its lights are turned on.
