The Xterra Triathlon is in the Dominican Republic to Stay
The popular Xterra Triathlon is now an annual reality in the Dominican Republic. The third annual triathlon was recently celebrated in the southwest Dominican city of Barahona, situated some 2.5 hours west of Santo Domingo.
The “Xterra Dominican Republic Barahona 2016 Triathlon” brought together local and international athletes from the United States, Costa Rica, Brazil, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, explained Polibio Schiffino, the president of the Casa Bonita Tropical Lodge, the main promoter of the Xterra Triathlon in the country.
Xterra is a world leader in off –road events and has sponsored championships in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
The event consists of a series of races which includes swimming in open waters, mountain biking and trail runs. The event was held near the Casa Bonita Tropical Lodge, and winners received some US$15,000 in prizes.
Athletes participating in the Xterra Triathlon must complete a 1.5 kilometer swim in open waters, a 30 kilometer mountain run through mountain trails and a 10 kilometer run for the more experienced athletes.
