Santo Domingo Industrial Association (AEIH) demands to end Fenatrado monopoly
Herrera and Province of Santo Domingo Industrial Association (AEIH) president Antonio Taveras Guzman is calling on the private sector, the government and political organizations to start legal proceedings against the truckers’ association cargo monopoly, which he describes as “one of the greatest distortions in the country’s economy.” In a press release sent out by the AEIH and published in Diario Libre today, Monday 21 March 2016, Taveras Guzman criticized the leniency and fear that the government shows towards these so-called unions, saying that rather than unions they are very powerful companies that impose their own law on the ports, subjecting business owners to their rates and conditions.
“It is a group that is accustomed to ending their differences by appealing to violence, threats and vandalism,” he stated, as reported in Diario Libre. He says that the high rates affect the entire price chain, which in turn pushes up the cost of living.
Truckers’ association (Fenatrado) president Blas Peralta is currently being held in pre-trial custody, accused of the murder of former UASD rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet. The Attorney General Office says it has evidence that the shots that killed Aquino were fired from the gun assigned to Peralta, who was an honorary member of the National Police.
