Santiago judge acquits customs employees in missing cash case
Santiago judge Ingrid Liberato has disregarded surveillance video evidence and discharged eight employees who were under investigation following accusations of stealing more than US$136,000 of a total of US$292,000 from a passenger who arrived at the Cibao International Airport on 29 June 2015, on the grounds of insufficient evidence. The video of the Customs employees sharing out the money among themselves was shown on social media. Passenger Osairy Mercedes Quezada Perdomo reported the theft of the money that she was illicitly importing in a suitcase.
The people released from charges are Domingo Antonio Pilarte, Marcos Daniel Felipe, Mairelin Rodriguez Batista, Leovigildo Ubiera Paulino, Nery del Carmen Correa, Benito Henriquez Tejada, Luz Carlina Infante Fermin and Army officer Ramon Hipolito Henriquez Tejada.
Quezada Perdomo’s defense lawyer was able ensure that her client, who is currently in jail in connection with the case, would be tried for contraband instead of asset laundering.
