New prisons across the country to focus on training for skills
Santo Domingo.- The Justice Ministry plans to build new prisons prioritizing the new model of correctional facilities, with at least two being inaugurated before year end, one of them especially equipped to hold convicted members of the military “so they’ll be under the control of the corresponding court.”
New Model Prison coordinator Ismael Paniagua made the announcement Tuesday, and said two of the prisons are being built in San Juan de la Maguana (west), Santo Domingo, Santiago Rodriguez (northwest), Barahona (southwest), Cotui (central), San Luis, and La Romana (east).
He said the Justice Ministry is satisfied for having trained more than 17,000 inmates of different nationalities.
“The various centers of the new model have more than 50 educational, technical and vocational training programs that benefit more than 9,000 prisoners with training in all areas such as industrial and residential electricity technicians, and over 54% in elementary and mid-level education,” Paniagua said
