Military unit and civilian firefighters stop the fire in the landfill of Sosúa
PUERTO PLATA – After battling the flames for nearly three days, soldiers of the Air Base of Puerto Plata, and several fire trucks in the area, managed to quell the intense fire registered in the Sosúa municipal landfill located behind the residential La Union.
It is indicated that the military and firefighting units arrived in the scene after responding to the call for help from citizens to quell the extensive fire that originated in the open air dump whose thick smoke prevented for some time the work of the International Airport General Gregorio Luperon and visibility of drivers of vehicles traveling on the Puerto Plata – Sosúa motorway.
In the heat of that problem, dozens of families living in the residential La Union, besides the sector Villa Progreso and El Tablón de Sosúa, were forced to leave their homes because of the smoke.
In the investigations it was established that the fire was the result of criminal hands since some unscrupulous torched an undetermined amount of tires, which generated a wide smoke that spread for several kilometers threatening to spread through the wooden areas near the place and could cause a wildfire.
