Mercer’s cost of living survey: Santo Domingo is not so expensive

Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic, is ranked 148th of 209 cities included in the Mercer 22nd Annual Cost of Living Survey. This makes it a relatively inexpensive city to live in.

Hong Kong is the most expensive city according to the survey that measures the comparative cost of more than 200 items in each metropolitan area, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment. New York is the most expensive city in the United States and Vancouver the most expensive in Canada.

The company prepares the rankings to indicate differences in cost of living factors affecting expatriates in popular assignment destinations. Because many complex and dynamic factors are involved in calculating an assignment pay package, the company stresses that the rankings should not be used as the basis for determining compensation.

Latin American and Caribbean countries included in the ranking are:

Buenos Aires, Argentina (41)
Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago (60)
San Juan, Puerto Rico (67)
Panama City (81)
San Jose, Costa Rica (94)
