Large groups of foreigners cloning cards
The Department of Criminal Investigation and High Technology Crimes (DICAT) of the National Police warns that there are large groups of foreigners operating in the country who use advanced technology to steal identities, clone credit cards and steal from ATM machines.
The director of DICAT, Colonel Licurgo Yunes said that the areas that are especially vulnerable are Bavaro, Puerto Plata, Veron and Cabarete, with large numbers of tourists. Colonel Yunes said that recent efforts have succeeded in reducing the criminal activities in cooperation with the judiciary and banks. He said several arrests had been made of Bulgarians, Venezuelans, Colombians and Chileans for credit card related crimes.
In one recent operation in April, a major group was disbanded. The evidence was found in nine laptops, printers to make credit cards, cell phones and more than 800 cards with magnetic strips that were ready to be cloned. During the operation, DICAT also took possession of 730 screen prints of different banks, cards ready to use, printing ink, over 42 molds, more than 400 MP4 cards magnetized to clone cards and cameras to put inside ATM fascias. All of those involved were now being held in jails throughout the country.
