Juan Oscar Polanco clinic closed again after patient death
The Ministry of Public Health authorities have announced the shutdown of the Centro Medico Maritza Jimenez, located on Av. Hermanas Mirabal in La Joya, Santiago, after a 24-year old patient died following an aesthetic procedure. The victim was Ramona Franco Cruz (Rony) from Moncion. Listin Diario reports that she worked at a well-known entertainment center in Plaza Bayacan, on Av. Victor Espaillat Mera. She died at the Centro Medico Cibao five days after buttock enhancement surgery. The Ministry of Public Health says the center violated Law 42-01 and its ruling 1138-03. According to relatives, Franco paid RD$65,000 for the operation.
Acento carries a TV report by Addis Burgos stating that the gynecologist, Juan Oscar Polanco, who is not accredited to practice plastic surgery, has been accused of other deaths but was freed on bail after a court banned him from practicing medicine.
Other court cases against him include sexual abuse when he ran the Ideamec clinic. Dora Suero, Ondina Canela, Elia Stephany Pena and Sara de los Angeles Martinez are named as other patients who died after plastic surgery in his practice. The report also points out that Polanco has used powerful influence in the courts in order to continue practicing. In the Dominican Republic, Polanco is only authorized to practice as a gynecologist. The Ministry of Public Health shut down his Ideamec clinic after several deaths.
