Is Leonel Fernandez campaigning for himself?
According to the Constitution, former President Leonel Fernandez can run for election in 2020. Current President Danilo Medina, who changed the 2010 Constitution so he could run again for a second consecutive term, will not be able to run again. A feature in El Caribe asks whether the former three-term President is campaigning for himself or for Medina.
Fernandez joined the PLD campaign going out on a visit by himself on Saturday, 2 April 2016. El Caribe comments that he is taking the opportunity to regroup his strengths now that he is the strongest pre-candidate into the 2020 election.
The feature says that Fernandez joined the campaign in order to support his followers who aspire to elective positions and to avoid running the risk of being isolated and later judged for not having worked for the victory of the political party of which he is the president.
Fernandez was the party’s leading candidate before President Danilo Medina pushed a change through Congress that enabled him to seek consecutive re-election.
