Independence Day, Feb 27th

After the parade through the streets of El Batey and Charamicos (27 February), the main street Pedro Clisante will be closed for traffic. The street is transformed into a free market where individuals and business owners can offer their wares, like ice cream, jewelry, clothes, fruits and vegetables, hot dogs and so much more. For the children there are various activities such as a bouncy castle, coloring, mask making, performing clowns and more. Furthermore there will be set up several terraces where visitors can enjoy a drink and a snack. The family day ends at 6 PM.

Between 1 and 3 PM, Charina Michelle Gonzalez will be present in restaurant Jolly Roger. We have not forgotten that last year during Independence Day Parade happened a tragic accident. A wall fell down from the roof of the ice cream shop ‘Bon’ in Charamicos on top of the watching youth on the street side. A girl, Amber Lydia, thereby lost her life, others were injured, including Charina Michelle Gonzalez (then 14) who nearly lost both her legs. Charina was rushed to Centro Medico Bournigal. There happened to be an excellent orthopedic surgeon from ‘Homes’ Hospital (Santiago) present, and he worked tirelessly for 10 hours to join her tendons and blood vessels again. This was just the first step; once the initial surgery was healed, the following operations began to heal her bones. She still has a long way to go, the long-term revalidation started to make sure Charina can walk again and lead a normal life.
Unfortunately, her parents are not insured and the hospital and rehabilitation costs are rising rapidly. Fortunately, many individuals and businesses were willing to donate (small or large) amounts to support the aggrieved family. But donations are still very necessary, because the revalidation of Charina takes many, many months. During the festival on Saturday, February 27th you can get acquainted with Charina in the afternoon at in restaurant Jolly Roger and maybe help her.
