Increases in mobile lines in the DR
A total of 8.82 million mobile lines were in operation in the Dominican Republic in January 2016, compared with 8.79 million in December 2015, according to data published by the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel). Of the total, 6.87 million were pre-paid lines and 1.95 million were post-paid. In terms of market share, Compania Dominicana de Telefonos/Claro had 4.48 million lines (4.47 million in December), followed by Orange Dominicana/Altice with 3.59 million (3.58 million in December), Trilogy Dominicana at 428,461 (433,944 in December) and Tricom with 309,329 (314,687 in December).
The number of local fixed lines in operation amounted to 1.15 million (unchanged), of which Compania Dominicana de Telefonos/Claro had 802,063 (800,129 in December), followed by Tricom 203,094 (206,174 in December), Trilogy Dominicana with 121,624 (120,308 in December), Skymax with 23,900 (21,600 in December) and Wind Telecom with 1,833 (1,967 in December). IP lines totalled 156,467 (154,384 in December), of which Tricom accounted for 85,607 (81,507 in December). The number of internet accounts amounted to 4.98 million (4.91 million in December), with Compania Dominicana de Telefonos/Claro (2.48 million) and Orange Dominicana/Altice (2.26 million) accounting for the overwhelming majority.
The number of pay-TV subscribers (cable, IPTV, satellite, wireless) reached 684.815 (674,847 in December), of which 325,246 subscribed to Compania Dominicana de Telefonos/Claro and 129,140 to Tricom.
