Government cannot afford doctors’ demands
Public Health Minister Altagracia Guzman Marcelino maintains that the government does not have the resources to meet the main demands of the public health unions, which are to allocate 5% of GDP to the sector, including a salary increase.
Meanwhile, most patients think that it is wrong to strike at the public hospitals. The president of the National Board of Trade Unions (CNUS), Rafael “Pepe”Abreu called on the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) to reflect on the methods they are using in pursuit of their demands. Poor patients who use the free services of the public health system are the worst affected, said Abreu, who expressed his disapproval for the method, “especially at a time when society faces the new threat of the Zika virus.”
