Government’s silence on canceled US visas roils Dominican society
Santo Domingo.- The Government’s silence on issues that roil the population and on which wide sectors for society demand a response is manifest once again, on the manner in which the US Embassy canceled the visas of Central Electoral Board (JCE) president Roberto Rosario.
Pundits were abuzz on the media Wednesday, demanding at least that the Government reveal the reason given by US diplomats for the unpresented measure.
Despite the uproar over the cancellation of Rosario’s US visas, neither the Presidency’s Press Office, very diligent in other occasions, nor the Foreign Ministry have referred to the issue which Rosario had described as “thorny.”
Prior to notifying Rosario that his visas were to be cancelled, US ambassador James W. Brewster visited president Danilo Medina late Thursday to report on the reasons for the State Department’s decision to cancel both the tourist and official visa of the president of the JCE.
Although the norm in these cases is to informed on what was discussed, at least one analyst quoted by elnacional.com.do said he had confirmed repots that the president had “accepted and understood” the reasons given by the US diplomat.
