Four-year old dies after being left in vehicle
A third child in recent months has died because of adult negligence. This time, a four-year old boy was left in the back of a vehicle by his uncle who was taking him to school. This is the third tragedy of this kind in the past eight months. On 30 March 2016, a five-month old baby girl, Nabila Gomez died in the same circumstances in Santo Domingo. Her father had forgotten she was in the car and went straight to work without dropping her off at daycare. Another case involved seven-month old baby Luis Carlos Tavarez Baez, who was left behind and suffocated in a SUV in Santiago on 15 September 2015 when his father took his other two children to school and dropped off his wife at work but then forgot to take the baby to daycare.
The most recent case involving the four-year old boy occurred in Las Terrenas, Samana. The preliminary Police report names him as Alex Javier Martinez, son of Roberto Ramos, who died inside a Mitsubishi Endeavor belonging to his uncle, Rafael de la Cruz Paredes. The child died at a clinic in Las Terrenas where he was taken but he was already close to death. As reported, De la Cruz Paredes picked him up from the parental home at around 2pm but forgot him inside his vehicle when he went to work and did not discover he was still in the car until three and a half hours later.
