Flights delayed and diverted at AILA due to fire at Las Americas International Airport
A fire broke out in the warehouse of the Dufry free zone company in the basement of the terminal at Las Americas International Airport at 6:45am yesterday, Monday 18 April 2016.
The airport fire brigade extinguished the fire but the electricity supply to the airport was cut off, Terminal A was closed and 10 flights were diverted for around an hour until the operation was completed. Even though the fire had apparently been put out, smoke was still visible and a team from the Salvage and Fire Extinguishing Service (SSEI) was sent to detect the source of the smoke.
Airport employees and residents of La Caleta and surrounding areas were alarmed by the volume of smoke and another fire brigade, from Boca Chica was also called in to assist.
The situation normalized soon after at the airport.
