Estrella retains Quito Open title
Dominican tennis player 35-year old Victor Estrella won the US$520,000 cash prize Quito Open this weekend, 6-7 February 2016. He repeated a victory he had already obtained in 2015. The win propelled him to ranking 56th in the world, up from 58th.
Estrella lost 4-6 in the first set against Thomaz Bellucci, but came back to win 7-6 (5) and 6-2 at the Club Jaracanda courts. The back-to-back Quito Open win meant US$82,450 for Estrella and 250 points for his ATP ranking.
Estrella will be playing in Santo Domingo at the 2nd Milex Open, a Challenger event with US$75,000 in cash prizes at the Santo Domingo Tennis Club (La Bocha). He is the number one seeded player in the tournament.
The ATP World Tour website highlights:
“Victor Estrella Burgos joined a select club with a comeback win in Quito on Sunday. The Dominican, who captured his first ATP World Tour title at age 34 last year, successfully defended his Ecuador Open Quito title with a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 final win against Thomaz Bellucci. He joined Stan Wawrinka (Chennai), Viktor Troicki (Sydney), Novak Djokovic (Australian Open) and Richard Gasquet (Montpellier) in successfully defending their titles this year. He and Wawrinka are the only players 30 or over to accomplish the feat.”
