Environment releases 76 baby leatherback turtles
Santo Domingo.- The Environment Ministry on Monday released 76 hatchlings of leatherback turtles in Playa Lavacam, Nisibon. La Altagracia province.
It said the group released belong to the second clutch of eggs protected and incubated in coolers at the Ria Maimón Protection Center last April 24.
“The hatchlings were released by technicians from the vice ministry of Protected Areas and Biodiversity headed by Andres Santana, manager of the Ria Maimon wildlife refuge in the town of Higuey,” Environment said in a press release.
It said the action is the result of its new policies on monitoring the nesting of sea turtles in the Dominican Republic in order to protect and conserve marine species.
