Environment Ministry orders destruction of hundreds of trees
The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources has authorized the elimination of hundreds of trees in the municipalities of Moncion, San Jose de las Matas, Constanza and Jarabacoa. The pine trees are infested with Bark Beetle (Ips callographus) and the measure is being taken in order to prevent the pest from spreading to farms and nearby plantations where they could result in major damage to the pine forests in these areas. According to a Ministry press release, the affected pines will be eliminated, sprayed and burned to prevent the pest from affecting other pines in the area.
According to the Ministry: “We have authorized this measure as it is the most beneficial for the forests in these areas… in time, since it has been demonstrated that this is the way to halt the spread of this pest…”
