DR volleyball players travel to Japan for Olympic qualifier
Dominican Republic (ranked 7th) faces Japan (5th), Italy (8th), Korea (9th), Thailand (13th), Netherlands (14th), Peru (21st) and Kazakhstan (26th) in its quest for one of four slots in the Rio Olympics that will be decided in the Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament. The tournament will be held from 14-22 May 2016 in Tokyo at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium that has seating capacity for 10,000 fans.
It will overlap with the Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Puerto Rico from May 20 to 22, featuring hosts Puerto Rico, Colombia, Algeria and Kenya competing for the 12th slot in the Olympics.
The winners will join seven countries that have already qualified for this year’s Olympic tournament, including hosts Brazil, FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup winners China and runners-up Serbia, European Olympic Qualification Tournament winners Russia, NORCECA Olympic Qualification winners USA, South American Olympic Qualification Tournament winners Argentina, and African Olympic Qualification Tournament winners Cameroon.
The Dominican team roster is: Niverka Marte, Camil Dominguez, Annerys Vargas Valdez, Candida Arias, Yineiri Martinez, Brenda Castillo, Ana Binnet, Gina Mambru, Lisvel Eve Mejia, Bethania de la Cruz, Brayelin Martinez, Prisilla Rivera, Yonkaira Pena and Winifer Fernandez.
Coach Marcos Kwiek told Diario Libre: “It will be a tough battle. All teams have a chance, but we are in the fight the same as all the others.”
If the DR qualifies, it will be the third time the Dominican women’s team makes the Olympic Games. The first time was in Athens 2004 (11th), the second in London 2012 when the DR placed fifth.
The DR plays its first game in the tournament against Thailand on 13 May 2016.
