Dominicans to Rio Olympics
The Dominican Olympic Committee has announced that at least 17 Dominican athletes in 11 sports have slots assured in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Some others who may make the team will be announced in June.
Diario Libre reports that three other Dominican athletes will compete for other countries where they have grown up and trained after immigrating as children. They include 22-year old gymnast Rayderley Zapata Santana, who will be representing Spain. He is a bronze medalist in the Glasgow 2015 World Gymnastic Games and just recently won gold in the men’s floor exercise at the First European Games in Baku.
Wrestlers Jaime Espinal (86 kg) and Franklin Gomez (65 kg) who both qualified at the Pan American Qualification Tournament will be representing Puerto Rico.
The athletes who qualified to represent the DR in the Olympics are: Ivonne Losos de Muniz (equestrian), Yessica Camilo (archery), Eduardo Lorenzo (skeet), Luguelin Santos, Starlin del Carmen, Yancarlo Martinez and Gustavo Cuesta (track and field), Luisito Pie, Moises Hernandez and Katherine Rodriguez (taekwondo), Rossy Feliz (fencing), Leonel de los Santos (boxing). Other possible members of the Dominican team are Candida Vasquez, Beatriz Piron and Yudelkys Contreras in weightlifting, Victor Estrella in tennis and the Dominican women’s volleyball team. The DR has also won a slot to compete in swimming.
