Dominicans share reverence to the Virgin of La Altagracia
Higuey, DR.- Thousands of Catholic pilgrims are arriving at Higuey’s Basilica to celebrate today the Day of La Altagracia, a manifestation of the Virgin Mary, the greatest religious fervors shared by Dominicans and Haitians.
Since Wednesday thousands of Catholics form long lines to enter the Basilica in reverence to La Altagracia, declared the country’s Patron Saint in 1922.
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported that the “Virgin of Altagracia 2016″ operation is intended to prevent and respond appropriately to emergencies that may occur during the celebration of La Altagracia holiday.
Metropolitan Transit Authority (Amet) agents will also increase significantly in the Las Americas Expressway and other roads leading to the Higüey town, in La Altagracia province, where the Basilica is located.
