Dominican Republic has the third highest number of femicides in Latin America
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic is Latin America and Caribbean country with the third highest number of femicides (3.6 per 100,000 women), surpassed by only by Honduras and El Salvador, said National Statistics Office (ONE) director Alexandra Izquierdo on Thursday.
“It is of extreme concern how the murders of men to women continue to be perpetuated, which represented 8.5% of all cases in 2015,” the official said citing data from the agency’s Statistical Panorama.
In cases where men murder women, Izquierdo said more than half of the perpetrators (50.6%) were persons belonging to the victim’s intimate circle. “These are classified as ‘intimate femicide’ perpetuated by the husband, ex-husband, boyfriend, ex-boyfriend or lover of the victim. While 19% were ‘non-intimate’ femicides, or murders committed by an unknown man with whom the victim had no relationship or link.”
