Dominican Republic does well in Davis Cup
Playing Barbados for the right to remain in the prestigious Group 1 of the Americas in the Davis Cup, Jose (Bebo) Hernández (ranked 212 by the ATP) made the difference when he defeated Haydn Lewis (1488th). Playing on Sunday, 30 October 2016 the media reported that Jose Hernandez played his best match in a Davis Cup and decided the series that was 2-2 with his 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory. Earlier, Dominican favorite Victor Estrella (ranked 94th in the world) had lost to Darian King (ranked 132nd) 7-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The game was played on the court of the Mirador del Este Park in Santo Domingo East.
Hernandez now will travel to Ecuador to play the Guayaquil Challenger on Tuesday, 1 November 2016.
On the first day of competition, Darian King defeated Hernandez 6-3, 7-5, 6-1. Estrella defeated Lewis 6-4, 6-3, 2-6 and 7-6. Playing doubles, Estrella-Hernandez defeated King-Lewis 6-4, 6-3, 2-6 and 7-6.
The next commitment for the Dominican team in the Davis Cup will be in 2017, when the Dominican Republic will play Chile in Group 1 on 3-5 February. The winner then passes to compete against Colombia on 7-9 April 2017.
