Dominican Republic’s Southwest starts its tourism trek

Pedernales, Dominican Republic.- After years of announcements and broken promises, the Public Works Ministry on Thursday broke ground for construction of the Pedernales Corridor (southwest), recently promised by president Danilo Medina.

Public Works senior official Ramon Pepin said the project will develop tourism in Pedernales, and includes construction of a pier, storefronts, fishing area, sports facilities, among other infrastructure.

He said the work also includes the expansion of the airport at Cabo Rojo, with a new terminal, a longer runway and access road.

Pepin said a new access roads to the village of Cabo Rojo will be built, especially to the beaches, including Bahia de las Aguilas. “It’s President Medina’s interest for Pedernales to become the haven of ecotourism.”

“I have heard the potential and the beauty of Pedernales since childhood, and I feel so good today, to be the person making such an important announcement for the development of this region that starts with Pedernales,” the official said.
