Dominican gang members arrested in New York
United States Drug Enforcement Agency officers, local police and other law enforcement agencies have arrested ten Dominicans suspected of belonging to a powerful heroin trafficking gang. Drugs with a street value of US$5 million were confiscated in the raid on an apartment in Inwood in Upper Manhattan.
The suspects were identified as Gaspar Mendoza Sanchez, who according to the DEA was the ringleader, Manuel Rivera, Jose Brito, Freddy Rivera, Carlos Rivera, Steve Mendoza, Cortorreal Rivera, Christopher Ortiz Acosta and Gissel Pichardo, along with one other unnamed person.
According to the DEA and the Special Antinarcotics Prosecutor the federal authorities said that they had also dismantled a large laboratory where the suspects allegedly processed the heroin to distribute to the street sellers.
The prosecutor revealed that they confiscated 22 pounds of heroin from the apartment and said that the suspects would be charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first and third degrees, along with use of drug paraphernalia in the second degree. They will be formally charged in Manhattan Criminal Court.
